Keep your magnetic nail polish from separating, thickening, or losing its pull. Practical tips for storage, magnet use, and fixing common issues.
Quick answer
Store your magnetic polish upright in a cool, dark place, shake rather than stir to remix the magnetic particles, and always use a strong neodymium magnet held close to the wet polish for the best effect.
Why magnetic polish needs special care
Magnetic nail polish contains tiny metal particles that align when exposed to a magnet. Over time, these particles can settle, the formula can thicken, or the magnetic response can weaken if the polish isn't stored or handled correctly. Proper care keeps the effect dramatic and the polish usable longer.
Diagnosis & fixes for common magnetic polish problems
- Polish has separated or looks watery: Gently roll the bottle between your palms or shake it vigorously for 10–15 seconds. Do not add thinner unless the polish is thick and stringy; if it's simply separated, shaking remixes the magnetic particles.
- Magnetic effect is weak or invisible: Use a stronger neodymium magnet (not the one in the cap, which is often too weak). Apply a thin final coat one finger at a time, hold the magnet 1–2 mm above the wet polish for 10–15 seconds. If the effect still fails, the polish may be too old or the particles have settled permanently. If the magnet doesn't produce any effect after trying a stronger magnet and fresh application, the polish may be beyond repair.
- Polish has thickened or become goopy: Add 2–3 drops of nail polish thinner (not acetone or remover) and shake well. Thickening is normal over time due to solvent evaporation. Store the bottle tightly closed and upright to slow this process. If thinning doesn't restore a smooth consistency, the polish has likely expired.
