COAL: Taylor, Texas (Dust to Dust)

Grinding this pigment myself with a mortar and pestle felt oddly therapeutic, and the charcoaled coconut base gives it a depth that store-bought powders just don't have. It's a small batch, but a little goes a long way for my projects.

The charcoal from Texas gives this pigment a really deep, rich black that I haven't found with other powders. It broke down nicely with a mortar and pestle just as described, and the natural color is exactly what I was hoping for.

The process of breaking it down with a mortar and pestle was surprisingly satisfying, and the deep black from the charcoaled coconuts is unlike any synthetic pigment I've used. It mixes beautifully into my oil medium with a rich, even tone.
